One of the many prophecies regarding the coming of Messiah says in Isaiah 49:6, “I will make You as a light for the nations, that My salvation may reach to the end of the earth.” Jesus said as part of the fulfilment of that prophecy in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” And in John 12:26 Jesus said, “believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” As those who have received the wonderful gift of forgiveness and mercy, who have been cleansed from sin and set free from our former sinful nature, we become children of the light. It’s not just that we contain light, but that we become light, just as Jesus is light. Jesus said in Matthew 5:14, that you are the light of the world, not just that you contain it but you are the light. Paul says in Ephesians 5:8, “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.” And he also says, as such, “Walk as children of light”. I believe the Lord wants to remind us, as we meet and share in festivities with our extended families, go away on summer holidays and spend time with our friends: You are light! Do not be hidden away. Do not be intimidated by the darkness, but as children of light, go with all the confidence and authority of the Lord, and know that you bring light into every dark place!
